UK Location Preferences of International Candidates

Some employers ask us if all international candidates just want to come to London, because it’s the place they are most familiar with in the UK. In our experience, though London is always popular with some, unless candidates have family or friends in London already or are young, single and keen to make the most of their youth, they may prefer to work outside of London because they are aware that the cost of living is very high.

That being said, there is a definite preference for locations that are easily commutable to London – perhaps just an hour or two away by train, but far enough to benefit from cheaper living costs.

Certain locations, quite far from London, rural locations, areas where there is high crime or places where there has been minimal international recruitment before tend to be less popular. In these cases, it is really important that any successful international joiners become advocates for their employer and attract others to relocate there. For these locations, certainly initially, employers may need to work harder to attract candidates – whether that be by superior marketing materials, attractive training opportunities or more generous relocation packages
